Workflow
A workflow is a sequence of tasks or operations carried out by an individual or a group. In the context of product information management, it refers to moving products, data or documents from one stage to the next until the final objective is reached—such as creation, validation, enrichment or publication.
Literally meaning a “work flow”, it is a structured set of operations to be performed to complete all tasks or activities grouped within the same business process. It therefore supports the modelling of business processes as part of BPM (Business Process Management), a broader approach.
The different processing steps or components of a workflow can be defined by three parameters:
- a description of the inputs;
- the transformation rules;
- a description of the outputs/results.
Implementing an automated workflow makes it possible to handle marketing operations or customer requests more quickly and at lower cost. It is a streamlining tool, similar to long-established rationalisation practices used in industry.
